Hi, So I got a Liteon SOHW-1673S and it works in the machine, But it still won't read blank discs,Trying to copy from hard drive to disc and it just makes a whole lot of noise like its about to blow up. I did change the firmware in the past before I put this new burner in,But not 100% sure which firmware is in there now?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Just to give you my experience.
I put in a LG Electronics GSA-H42N with firmware RL00 and my 5045 has a hacked firmware of uk204 (http://www.ss3f.com/ilo/5045/index.htm).
It now plays everything (before this it would only play +RW's)
I cannot get it to write on three different types of -R (I have not tried -RW).
It writes on +RW but will not finalise and it writes and finalises OK on +R(just some cheap brand I bought to try out)
I updated the DVD drive firmware to RL01 but this did not make any difference.
As before the fast foward and fast reverse worked pretty good.
On the whole I'm happy I chose this drive (well spotted niftybass )
I'll just use +R's from now on instead oh -R's.
Does anyone know,is it OK to update the 5045 firmware after the DVD drive has been replaced?

DVD+RW do not need to be finalized, skip DVD-RW with the LVW 5045 due to format time, try some quality DVD-R media such as TY or Verbatim. Firmware update may or may not work, good chance it will (Try at your oun risk).

First, forgive me if I stumble on protocol here, as I am (as of about seven minutes ago) a NEWBIE.

I've been reading with interest this (presumably useful) advise on replacing the burner in the 5045, which is something I think I may need to do. But I'd like to pose two questions to you all, the better-informed:

1) The DVD drive that came with the 5045 still does fine in playing back professionally recorded DVDs, as well as those I previously burned on the same drive before this problem. When I "burn" a file from the hard drive to a DVD-R or DVD-RW disc, it appears to go through burning process completely, but when it comes to the last step of finalizing, it doesn't recognize the disc or indicates its corrupt/incompatible. This has happened countless times, with various media brands and various size files. (BTW, I've installed and reinstalled the latest Lite-On drivers.) So, do I need to replace the drive or, because it's performing well otherwise, is there a fix for it?

2) Assuming I do need to replace it, what is meant by "set the region" and, because my desktop machine is a Mac (OS 10.4), can I perform this task it on that machine or do I have to use a PC?

Thanks and, again, please forgive any clumsiness in my first post.

Try cleaning the lens first if that does not work replace the drive.
One the drive starts to have problems it does not fix itself.
You can set the region just by playing an origional DVD with your DVD player program I would think that will also work with a Mac.

This site is a great help-thanks to everyone involved! My 5045 has already had two replacement drives under warranty. Recently, out of warranty, it started showing the same tell tale signs of needing yet another replacement (poor show, Liteon!) I thought about updating firmware but my logic stopped me-if it had been working perfectly before, and with the same discs, it must be the drive.

After reading everything here I purchased two second hand SHW-160P6S (61C) drives. They were only £10 ($20) each and the shipping costs were no different between one and two units. Therefore, I reckoned it was worth the small difference to buy two-firstly because of previous reliability (albeit with a different drive model) and secondly because they seem hard to come across now.

The units arrived the next day and I was delighted to see that they were both only manufactured in late 2006! I am also delighted to report that the one I fitted worked beautifully straight out of the box (apart from the well documented lack of fast forward but, hey, who cares-I can fast forward by chapter and then rewind). Great result!

As far as modification for fitting goes I admit to being lazy! Apart from bending two metal lugs on the front of the machine to allow the drive to sit closer to the front, I just used big lumps of blu-tac to sit it in place. The cover went on no problem. As far as the little rectangular slot cover goes, I just let the drive pop it out and then sit it back when the unit closes. It stays in place no problem.

So I am just careful whilst loading discs. And to prevent damage in transit, I have a little label stuck on the top of the unit to remind me about the blu tac and to be careful whilst moving!! All lazy, I know, but it saved a lot of hassle and as long as care is taken whilst using or moving, everything will be just fine.

Thought I would take the time to post this to continue the spirit of this helpful community-thanks again and good luck to those in need of it!

MY LVW-5045 allways says invalid disk, finalise disk and each time say invalid disk. I ordered a LG GSA-H42N Black in Canada for 39.99$, is the ceapest price I found. I hope it will be fit in my LVW-5045 Us model. I will let you know when I will try it.

Hi

I've got the same probelm with my DVD Drive (UK Model 5045)

was replaced under the UK 2 year warrenty - but has now gone again

downloaded firmware onto the 5045 - worked fine for a couple of months - now won't receognise new disks altho rest is fine ie Hard drive playing of multi region commercial DVDs

what's the latest recomended replacment drive -

I see the LG GSA-H42N Black and the SHW-160P6S drives are mentioned in the threads as being good

can they still be obtained in UK ?

do they restore full finctionality ?

do they play multi-region DVDs with the standard Liteon hack or any other hack ?

is there any other suitable drive ?

any recent good or bad experiences

thanks

PG

May I on the other side of the world join the 'It aint working LVW 5045' club please?
I have read with interest all of these postings and if I can get the 5045 running again all the better.
I would like to have it Region Free if possible but if this now isnt possible, multi region players are readily available and reasonably priced today compared to when I bought the 5045 in Sept 2005.
The last firmware I saw available for my region (4) was in 2006.
If there are any further comments regarding experiences replacing the DVD drive I would appreciate hearing of them.
If I do try to replace the DVD drive, I was considering leaving it external suitably attatched to the case.
Anyone have any thoughts on suitability of doing that?

You want to leave it external then leave the case top off or cut a slot in it.
not very clean or neat but should work.

Hi,
I have read almost all the posts and threads about this.

I have a LVW-5045GDL+ and the drive has die. I wanted to replace my drive and I find your forum. I didn't find the LG GSA-H42N so I bought the GSA-H55L for testing. I set the region and I put the new firmware (1.05) It worked fine (read, FF) but didn't recognized my media for recording from the hard disk. I used TDK DVD-R, TDK+R and TAYIO YUDEN DVD-R (all 1-16x, maybe this is the problem). It does recognize CD blank disks.

I thought that the drive was not compatible and after searching I found the Sony DRU-190A (1.65). With the same blank disk I had the same problem. I change the firmware to LiteOn DH-20A3P (XY13) but no luck.

Can somebody tell me what else can I do? Is the 16x media the problem or I do something wrong.

Thank you

I've tried some 8x blank disks (-R and +R) and they worked fine with Sony DRU-190A (firmware DH-20A3p).
I don't understand why the 16x disks don't work. I haven't problem before the original drive die.

Read http://club.cdfreaks.com/f102/replac...8/index10.html and choose 1 of those, or get 1 of the older drives at http://www.google.com/products?hl=en...num=1&ct=title, http://3btech.net/memr32li20xd.html, http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...sou05134271-20 or http://www.smksuperstore.com/product...c3a81b5fc93b37. Note the SHM-165H6S from Amazon may be cross flashed to Sony DRU-120C to gain fast forward function if that's important. I cross flashed a SHM-165P6S to Sony DRU-120C for that same reason. Also note the Memorex drive is a rebadged LiteOn that's used as replacement burner in post #187 at http://club.cdfreaks.com/f102/replac...98/index8.html.

Cross flashing is simply flashing a drive from its rebadge to parent model or from parent model to its rebadge. The example given is post #47 is cross flash from the LiteOn parent model SHM-165P6S to its Sony rebadge DRU-120C. Cross flash for LiteOn and its rebadges requires running FlashFix on firmware to be used for cross flash and then flash the drive with FlashFixed firmware just as any firmware would be flashed. For more details read about cross flashing in the LiteOn burner forum.

Eh??? i just want to get a drive that will work in 5027 and fit it not redesign firmware?? i have trouble with all this software an stuff... ok at fixing stuff and fitting - i am old!!! and very!! It seems to be sort of still working, but i know its on its last legs so is a equivelent NEW drive that will drop straight in??

So a Sony drive - would work with FF ok?? but what model number would i need? all these posts are 2 years old - you cant get DRU 120 in the UK now!!! sorry to sound dumb, but i cant afford to get it wrong!!!

How about this would it work in a 5027, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-DRU-190...9725835&sr=1-1

All posts seem to be for 5005/5045?
