Discs recently finalized on my 5006 are not playing on my Sony player. (See http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=150462) Could someone give me some tips on how best to clean the lens? Do I use a cleaning disc and, if so, what brand is recommended? Or do I use a cotton swab. If so, with alcohol or what on it? And if I have to get into the unit to clean the lens, any place where that process is described?

CD/DVD lens cleaners as well as CD/DVD cleaners are usually sold where DVD media is sold in brick and mortar stores as well as on the internet.

There are a wide range of cleaning discs out there, but from what I see, they all do pretty much the same thing - brush the dust off the laser lens. Some discs have one or two long brushes towards the centre, which brush the lens as the drive attempts to spin up the disc. Some other cleaning CDs have thin brushes towards the outside of the disc, thus allowing the player to spin up, such that when the user jumps to the track containing the cleaning brushes, the disc continues playing as the brushes clean the lens.

The first type is quite rare now as many players are very quick to reject these since the disc contains no readable content. The 2nd type is fairly common and the disc type is recognisable by looking out for cleaning discs containing audible instructions. I don't think brand name really matters as the all do pretty much the same job.

If you are willing to open your player to gain access to the laser lens, I would recommend just using a dry cotton swab. If you use liquids, there is a very good chance of smearing the lens or leaving a residue on it. This obviously ain't good for the lens!
