Hi jm1647,
This a newbie asking: How do you know what firmware you need and when to upgrade? I just bought a lvw-5005X. It works like a charm, except that after finalizing a VHS-DVD transfer, the DVD does not play on anything. Lite-on does not even see it, it says no disk after loading. Please instruct. Thank you.

O.K gang. Goodbye Liteon 5005. Hello Matsui and Hewlett Packard with hard drive. Got a set up that finally does what it says on the tin. My Liteon's in my caravan with the only 3 remaining +RW discs left on the planet that'll work with it. There's a little hint for anyone still struggling to fly these liteon things. Thanks for the thoughts and goodbye forever. Best regards P.S

Are there any firmware mods to enable bit setting on the LVW-5005, i.e. change booktype for +R media to DVD-ROM as default record booktype, and would such mod affect Macrovision removed via hacked 1098 firmware?

I apologize if I'm breaking any rules here, but this is a little confusing.
I have a LVW-5005 manufactured October 2005, with firmware upgraded serial number 0102-1140-0101-G2BD(000-010B). I wish to downgrade to the hacked firmware that enables 3 hour recording and removes Macrovision. Can anyone send me the firmware file, and instruct me how to downgrade? I tried downgrading using an unhacked firmware, but the recorder won't let me. I've been having some problems with the recorder since this happened, and would like to get it working normally again. The drive in the unit is a DDW-451S.

Again, any help would be hugely appreciated.

Has anyone found a site with downloadable firmware for the LVW-5104. I have tried several of LiteOn's sites, and none of them seem to have it. I had to scrounge to even find a download for the user's manual. Can I use firmware from my LVW-5006?

Unfortunately it looks like Lite-On has not released any new firmware for your model yet. As I have not heard of this model # until now, it is likely a new product Lite-On has just released on the market. Generally it takes at least a couple of months before the first new firmware is releasd. Unfortunately, I can confirm that you will not be able to use firmware from a different model. You can give it a try if you are curious, however if the recorder does not recognise it as suitable firmware, it will report the disc as 'Data Disc' instead of bringing up a firmware update screen.

Just out of curiosity, which Lite-On model do you have?

Lite-On's firmware can be downloaded from this following page (for US models):

Hi Sean. Thanks for the info about firmware for the 5104. It is a model which has been carried by Radio Shack stores for the past several months, but does not seem to be widely available elsewhere. I suspect that it might be a repackaging of some other model, a practice which LiteOn has been known to do in the past.

I logged on to www.liteonit.com and went to Open Chat in the Support area. The tech I chatted with said they would send me an email with the firmware upgrade. That was a couple hours ago and they are now off line. I'll have to try again tomorrow.

i have the firmware files for the 5006 models made around early 2005, and sold at Radio Shack. they are when the files were separate drive & system firmware files, and are the LNHA1098.ES5 (both hacked and unhacked) and the LNHA1000.E30. if anyone needs these, or you want to post them i can e-mail them in.

i have the LNHA1098.ES5 (both hacked & unhacked) and the LNHA1000.E30 that i got straight from Lite-On. and it was like pulling teeth. (not the hacked version: i did that myself.) this should restore any 5006, (and possibly 5005) to their original state, and then drop in the hacked disc and the other one (i forget which is system and drive) and they should turn off the macrovision and make the unit region free. anyone needing these contact me at the following e-mail, and i will e-mail them to you:

I have a brand new LVW-5005. I understand that I need to downgrade to the 098 firmware before hacking it, however after reading the download/upgrade/downgrade instructions at the LiteOn and Mr Wizzard sites, I've got myself a bit confused. Perhaps someone could review my understanding of how to proceed and let me know if I have it right or wrong.
STEPS TO DOWNGRADE TO 098 FIRMWARE:
1. At Guitarman's ilo site, click on "Archive of LiteOn Firmware Files" then select LNFA1098.ES3.zip -- which I believe is the file to DOWNGRADE to the 098 firmware. Download to Desktop. Unzip the file.
2. IS THIS UNZIPPED FILE (LNFA1098.ES3 ) A DISK IMAGE? OR SIMPLY A "DATA FILE"?? Nero Express does not recognize LNFA1098.ES3 when I tried to "record a disc from disc image". But it does let me create a "Data Disk" with that file on it, then burn a CD-R. Is that the way to get the firmware downgrade onto the CD???
3. Power on the 5005. Insert the prepared upgrade disc and close the tray. The upgrade process starts. When successfully completed, remove the disc, then power off and on again.
STEPS TO HACK
1. Download ILO/LiteOn Firmware Hacker (Version 1.5b) from Mr Wizzard site.
2. Unzip it. Double Click ILOHack.exe to run the program. Press the "Select Firmware File" button, then select the firmware you downloaded. The program will display the success results in the Status window.
3. Burn the hacked firmware file to CD-R as a DATA CD [not an ISO image, right?] & Finalize it.
4. Power on the 5005. Insert the CD-R and close the tray. An upgrade message will appear, select OK. After upgrade is complete, remove the CD-R.
5. Power OFF the 5005, then power back ON.
Don't understand Mr Wizzard's next step that says "In the Setup menu of the unit, look for "Restore" and select it. (unit will do another system restore)" Is this necessary?

The file LNFA1098.ES3 is not an image file so you just need to burn that file to a data CD. The full instruction for what to do are on the LiteOn site itself, a link is there on the page you get the firmware from.

I'm trying to downgrade my 5005. The unit now has 101 firmware. I burn the 098 file to a cd (disk at once, finalized), but the unit refuses the disk, or it just sits there softly clicking away.

Any idea if downgrading this unit is even possible?
thanks

Got my LVW-5005 from newegg this week - also has serial number 0102-1140-0101-G2BD(100-010B)...(manufacture date Dec 2005).
1.I tried to update with factory version of 098 (LNFA1098.ES5) and hacked version
2.But could not get the recorder to run it (display says "Reading", "Data Disc", then ejects it).
3.I used the same disc that worked on my other 5005 SN 0102 1840 0098 PSOA(015-010D) I think the 1140 v 1840 could be the problem.

Hi All,
I have tried and failed miserably to get my 5005b s/n 0102-0243-0080-B20N to update to the 98 version to give me 3hrs recording and macrovision off.
I have downloaded the file from Mr.Wizard (and opened from the compressed state)and burned to both -R and R/W discs but the recorder just says 'data file' and refuses to go any further.
Where am I going wrong?
I feel a right moron.

On the other hand it took almost a full day of Googling to figure out how to "update" it with the desired features. To save any other late comers the touble here's what I found to work for me:

1. Starting serial number out of box (manufacture date Dec 2005):
0102-1140-0101-G2BD(100-010B). Where from what I understand means:
0102 - Motherboard type
1140 - DVD Drive type
0101 - System firmware version
G2BD - DVD drive firmware version
1 - Region locked to Region 1
0 - Macrovision (r) is ON
0 - Update filename ends in .ES0
010B - ???

2. Upgraded to the latest factory version (LNFA1101.ES0) downloaded from the
Liteon web site. Theory: factory update may have firmware update for
drive. After update the SN didn't change so theory is probably incorrect
and the update wasn't necessary.

3. Downgraded to the factory version of 098 (LNFA1098.ES5) downloaded from
http://www.pumapeople.com/liteon/. I tried to load the "HEXED"
LNFA1098.ES5 image from http://www.pumapeople.com/liteon/ several times
without success. Some people have reported it was necessary to install
the unhacked version first so I tried that. It didn't help for me, but
at least it flashed.

4. Hacked the factory version using the program downloaded from
http://ilohacker.tripod.com/ILOHack15.zip. The resulting differences are
just 5 bytes:
Comparing files LNFA1098.ES5 and HACKED\LNFA1098.ES5
000000A7: 5C 60
000000EB: DA DE
000A13D6: 01 00
000A13DA: 00 01
001DB034: 1B 1F
The "hexed" LNFA1098.ES5 image from http://www.pumapeople.com/liteon was
different by a couple of bytes.

5. Upgraded the factory 098 using the locally hacked LNFA1098.ES5... worked.
Device serial number is now 0102-1140-0098-G2BD(015-010B). Macrovision
and 3hr recording modes tested and working.

Hi CC Romeo,
Thanks for taking an interest, I still have a problem and this is what I have done so far.
I followed smogbounds instructions and started with trying to update from the Liteon site.
Unless I am mistaken Liteon doesn't allow version 98 anymore it gives 101 as the next upgrade from 80 and if I am right once you have downloaded 101 you cannot go back to 98 is that right?
Anyway I went to the ilohacker.tripod site and downloaded version 98 from there.
I burned this but all I got was a ' data disc' message from the recorder.
I went back to the Liteon site an copied there exact instructions which included making an ISO image for the installation disc.
So I download a programme to do the hacked file to ISO mode (don't really know what I am doing) but all I got was 'can't read this type of file' from all three programmes I tried. (I did it with three different programmes and they all said the same)
I am definately doing something wrong but what?
What type of file am I downloading from the ilohacker.tripod site and does it need altering to make it work?
Any help greatly appreciated.
