Updating the drive fw should solve the media problem. You WILL lose your 'enhancements' as the system fw will be upgraded too. Post #1 has links to the files, at least for the 5005. or you can go to lite-on directly at http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/d...p?sn-style=NEW

Is there a firmware upgrade?

I tried to use the latest firmware upgrade and it asks then begins. Spits out the CD and continues the upgrade which it says it completes. The numbers do not change however.

What am I doing wrong?
Could be the way you put the files on the CD. They should be written as disk-at-once (for Roxio Easy CD creator). Go to http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_dvd.htm then unzip the file and create, not copy, to a data CD. Current file LNMBU018.zip contains the Nov-10-2005 update.

The link in my post 52 is the main sw/fw download at lite-on. You do NOT need the 105-010D, as it is xxx'd out on the page.

Hi Tony!

Thanks for that great link.

Does anybody know what´s about that LNEBE098.ES5 (5001) in the "UK-LVW5001-hacked" dated 11-Feb-2006 over there?

I am not able to get it into my 5001. Started out from Firmware 1141 and 1163 but always get "error"

Marcus 667, So you updated a ddw-451s g2bd drive with the lvw-451s firmware (like lvw-451s gsbc). Is this correct? If so let me guess, the drive tray never opens.

Hi.I have a Liteon 5005A.sn:0102-1840-0101-B20G(100-010D).Oct.2004 manf date.
My unit stopped burning DVD's.It will burn VCD's and SVCD's.It wont read many types of DVD+R's,such as Sony and Memorex, meaning I insert the disc and it keeps saying "preparing" or "loading" FOREVER.It used to work.I've burned lots of discs with these two brands in the past.I think it may have all gone wrong with the second to last firmware update I did in Aug of 2005(LNFA11011.ESO.0102.184x).The funny thing is that it also won't burn anything to the original RW that came with the machine.I had some music vids burned on it,and when I tried to add some more,it acted like it was recording and when I went to play it back the thumbnail on the menu screen was black. When I highlited it and pressed play,my unit froze up.I repeated this several times, and each time the same thing happened.
I'm open to ANY help.I also don't have a problem using a hack if that will help.Because as far as I'm concerned the unit is of no use to me now,and can't afford a new one. Thanks in advance.

Oh,one more thing.I've been to the Liteon web site, and I think I have the latest firmware.I also have called Liteon, they told me to clean the lens and I'm out of warranty and that they could'nt help me with any repairs.

This thread looks like vidtek is the guru. I've been having an absolute laugh with my kit. I've got a Liteon LVW5005 and a Compacks DRW101. Each has a single standard sky digibox in. [i.e 2 digiboxes in total] with their scart outs going to their own SCART input on the TV. Like so many before me I was recording and playing back on DVD+RW's no matter which machine recorded and which was playing back. THEN...........go through these forum threads and everything reported has happen to me....The Liteon was first to give me grief followed by the compacks. I've kept the blank dvd+rw manufacturers in business single handedly. I've tried everything and even kept each drives' blanks to its own in case spurious software was been recorded. I get one recording every now and again from the compacks and hardly a minute's worth on the lite on. I'm wondering if the machines have been spiked- we live in a rural location about 7 miles from a nuclear power station. I've got spike protectors on all my studio gear but.............I know............go on, everybody. I'm now going to try the firmware from that terrific link, thanks, vidtek and keep swearing and kicking the dog. In the meantime guys, any tips would be really appreciated. Does a recorder with its own hard drive obviate the disc thing problems, or does dvd recorder=problems full stop? Watching and learning. Best regards, all. P.S

Tried the pumapeaople downloads. No luck. Just sees them as a data disc and chucks them out. I forgot to mention that I'd previously put the latest firmware from the liteonit site. My guess is that these recorders are junk. You're welcome to queue round my wheeley bin- Mondays is collection day ! It's over to you guys, if you don't mind. SN 0102-3243-0101-8203 [200-0100] drive DDW-8135. Manufacture October 2004. I've really spent some time on this and I've inwardly digested this site, so, honestly, I'm not trying to freeload. regards to all. P.S

Sorry about the piecemeal posting, but I'm feeding in as I try everything. The only firmware that goes in is the Lnfbe101.esO from the liteonit site. I've just tried a new writer in and everything is as was. A significant occourance is that erasing discs invariably reaches 84% then fails. Re trying and retrying again sometimes gets to 87% and beyond, even 100% but unless an erase has gone from 0-100% without a glitch I know the recording will dip. There. That's everything. Failing a solution from your good selves, my wheeley bin will be 2 dvd writers richer. I've tried every make of dvd+rw on the approved list. Maxell aren't even recognised and verbatim are the worst of all, even though everyone raves about them. This is it. Goodbye forever !

I can't read. I meant lnfbe101.e20 would go in. I've now put lnfbe101.e30. no difference. goodbye forever and ever.

Has anyone tried applying LVW-5005 firmware to a LVW-5104?

Supapete,
What about this for an example..
My 5005b will only operate as a player and will not accept any discs of any kind anymore.
It used to love Philips +R and RW, Verbatim, Maxell and loads more. Now it calls them all 'data discs' and spits them out. Won't erase any of my RW's even those that have only been used once.
Won't accept any attempt at a firmware upgrade, it just sits there and only wants to play not record. So at least it does that - for now.

I was beginning to think it was just me !
Ditto Phillips. I bought a truck load on offer from Currys. I also went for Verbatim from Staples on offer. My 5005 has now evolved to recording on three rewritables only. No particular brand. It seems it just feels like recording on these discs. PCline from pc world and a Hewlett Packard from pc world. The othe 50 have made great fire lighters. I bought a Matsui ?? from a car boot sale on Sunday. The guy said he'd bought it for his aging mum who couldn't understand it. I paid £25 with no comic, so I guessed I might have bought a £25 plug ! It records on all the discs that the lite on rejected except a couple bearing my teeth marks. The rules here, it seems, are there are no rules. The price these things are changing hands at are a fair indication of the demand versus supply situation presently. They can be considered consumables. Hard disc recorders are coming down in price big time, so I reckon this'll be the way to go, using the odd blank for backing up for posterity. My liteon 5005 will be installed in my wheely bin, definately before much longer. I've not been much of a contributor, I'm afraid, to this great forum. Cheers, guys and girls. Happy beer mat spinning. Best regards to all. P.S

You do know that when you delete something from a RW disc, it isn't really deleted, don't you?

The space is bypassed when you delete something, so the data disappears, but the sectors are still used. You may be running out of space.

DVDs and CDs are write-once media, even if they're rewritable - unless you reformat a rewritable drive.

Yep. Thought of that. Good point, though. Someone's going to have to really astound me with technospeak solutions to convince me that these things aren't throw-away, by design. Built-in obsolescence was started by the car manufacturers and it's kind of accepted without question or even awareness. It's definately hard disc recorders for me.

I experienced all the issues (and more) mentioned by iscynical, dvd4me, supapete and probably others,
on my 5001 (Nov 2003 no fan).
So finaly i decided to change the drive. Opening the box, seeing the drive, i thought a plastic disk spinning fast in a plastic box could produce and keep a lot of static electricity, and nothing to bring it out. So i just fixed a wire on an external screw of the housing and pluged it in the ground wall socket.
Guess what: all problems solved;even the image from the internal tuner looks better. Very easy to set up, may be you could try this on the 5005.

Well, I'm most ashamed to say that as a lecturer drumming the evils of static into my students, I never thought of that viewpoint. It's also been my main bugbear here. I live in a remote location with an overhead dangly thing delivering the mains. The earth is a double-up of the neutral. It's also against the law to actually earth it. I have a stake driven into the ground outside to earth myself whilst working in my studio. I've responded impetuously to your excellent point thus haven't applied it yet. Nice one dofre. Watch this space. regards.

hello supapete hello all.
At home I (hopefully) catch the earth on the cold water pipe.
Here in France your type of set up is better suited for workshops or factories . Others may chose to wire the box on their gold stock under the bed . Hope it works for you.

P.S overhead dangly thing is not in my dictionary, I imagine anything

Bon jour dofre. I didn't know you were in beautiful France. We share being among Celts. I guess much was lost in the translation. Our supply is by way of a tapping to overhead cables. We are sparcely populated and close to a nuclear power station. Surges are commonplace as are power cuts. Earthing is indeed an issue. Our water supply arrives via alkathene and the copper in-house plumbing is bonded to the earth bar which as I said doubles up from the neutral. Thus, all I'd be doing would be applying anther neutral to the chassis. I tried grounding to my gold store but much was wasted when I drilled into the ingots to take a terminal bolt. I tried soldering, but was unable to raise the temperature of such a large mass to enabe the solder to run.I'll still try to disipate the static somehow, which I've yet to try. I'm thinking of moving to an underground cave and bolt everything to the walls. That should do it. regards. P.S

Salut supapete. Well your environment don't look so right when it comes to electronic behaviour. Forget about the cave(mushrooms!). You could negociate the yellow dust from the drilling for a better insulated recorder . By the way on my Liteon the spinning disk in its plastic cage may not be the main culprit for those disorders, the power unit could
participate or any association I have no skills to detect, but this idea lead me to ground the box
and that was it.
I will no longer divert readers from the main subject of this thread but still looking forward to read you could fix your unit one way or another.

Had same "data disc" pblm....until a light bulb hit me. 1. put the disc in the tray 2. close the tray. 3. power off unit. 4 power on unit. then you will get the screens show the procedure
