Is there possibly a problem with some lots of these recorders sold by Costco this December? I would very much appreciate hearing the experiences of others who have this model. I apologize for the long winded post but I wanted to include pertinent details.

My October 5005A ignored "ANY & ALL" firmware updates; regardless of the version. It came from the factory with FLFNA 1090 firmware installed (says so on name tag). The serial number on that name tag was 602441042551. I just exchanged that one for an August 2004 with S/N 60143200533. It also rejects all updates.

I've tried numerous ways to install firmware updates to my 5005 with "no joy" (only 16 coasters). These included the latest installation directions and the firmware file LNFA1091.ESU (both provided directly on Liteon Tech Support email on 12/30/2004) as well as other firmware versions including LNFA1076, LNHA1092 & LNFB2063.D00.

When the updating CD-R is placed in the tray; it closes, loads, starts to read "FILE" then the TV screen flashes "DATA DISK" & rejects it. I make the firmware CD-r's as follows. Also described is what happens when I load them.

1) Open & unzip the file called LNFA1091.ESU
2) Burn it onto an Imation brand CD-R using Nero Burning Data Disk, ROM in ISO mode with "finalizing the disc" checked so it's on.
3) Placed the finalized CD in the tray of the LVW5005 with the Liteon logo screen visible on the TV monitor.
4) When the tray is closed, a gray bar opens at the top of the screen with
a message "reading". After a bit of time, the message in the gray bar changes to say "data disc". Then the gray bar disappears, leaving only the logo screen.
5) Tried turning the unit off then back on. It repeats the steps in 4) above.
When you say you burn the disc "IN ISO MODE" do you mean that you tell Nero that LNFA1091.ESU is an .ISO file? If so ... that is your problem. You must create an ISO-9660 disc having one file in the root directory, which is LNFA1091.ESU

I've had my 5005 for about 3 months now, and last night it died on me. The damn thing just froze while viewing mid disc and would not eject it. The thing is basically toast.

Now . . . my brother bought one a few weeks ago. After a week of owning his, the same thing happened, except he was fortunate enough to be able to eject his disc. His unit would power on, but would remain stuck at the HELLO led display (same as mine).

Just curious if anyone else has had any experience with this unit.

Thanks in advance . . .

My experience is that when the 5005 says data disc and ejects the disc, then there is something that definitely went wrong with the burning.

This happened to me when I tried burning the hacked furmware file and still had the file open in the HEX editor. This caused the file to burn weird (sometimes grow in file size) and Nero would complain of a warning but say it successfully burnt the disc. However these would never work.

At the very least, get the procedure from the liteon website and upgrade to the Liteon supplied 1091 FW using their exact procedure. If this doesn't work you are doing something wrong or some is screwed up in your software/hardware setup. Once you can successfully burn 1091 to your machine, use the exact same procedure for the hacked 1091 FW.

For Patriot1, couple of apparent facts and suggestions:

- There are several different versions of the 5005, and very picky on what firmware they accept for update.

- Didn't see in post where you tried update via web - http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_dvd.htm - and follow the prompts. If it say you are updated, determine what part of the number from setup you entered is the version number....lower that and try again. Then I would download this, and try and do some of the edits posted on this site for 3hr and no MV. However I ran into trouble as some of the hex values posted by BrianP were different than mine....
I had no luck with their tech support, also received email .esu files that my 5005 would not process, even though I provided serial numbers, manuf date, ect....

It took awhile but finally was able to get the 3hr mode and no MV - good luck

Shuster, I use the Nero and successfully upgraded with the hacked 1091....but I just did a data cd burn, adding that one file to be burned. (options did show finalized was checked). I have seen this ISO referred to a number of times, but I never see anything about it in the Nero product...again the cd burned with the hacked file fine, and was processed by the 5005..thanks

I've got a UK Pal 5005 made Jan04 SN 0102-1241-0090-F2SC When I downloaded the new update from liteon it gave me the file LNFBE091.ESU.0102.124x.rar I haven't updated it yet because I was holding on for the hack 3-hour mode and MV removed. But I'm unsure which one I need,,,, if there is one.
Can anybody help?

Hope these help, its the Nero 6 Burnng Rom settings I used yesterday to burn my edited Pal firmware: (al assuming you have extracted the rar or zip to get the file ending.esu, type ESU file):

With apologies for stating the obvious at times but its clear that a lot of people have problems burning!

New Compilation - CD - CD-rom (iso)
click ISO tab on dialogue box - should show - mode 1; iso 9660 only, max of 31 chars (level 2), iso 9660 (standard iso cd-rom). Then ensure all 4 of the entries in the Relax Restrictions section are deselected
Click Burn tab and ensure write and finalise cd are selected.

click new, add your file so that in the left hand column (under) ISO1 it says New, then in the next column you drag your file .esu and then burn, ideally to cdrw, speed doesnt seem to be a problem, I burnt at 4x

good luck

Gaz66 use the edited firmware that MW9772 posted a couple of pages back, thats working with 3hr hack and macro off. Or if you feel like it edit your fimrware as per his instructions, thats all I did and using burn settigns as above updated my machine.

hi guys
well i took the plunge and bought a 5005, from argos its a week old so got 9 days left on return policy . but im hopeing to avoid this !

my problem is this and probably many others if they look closer if they have upgraded to LNFBE091.ESU.0102.124x

my liteon is version 5005b october model the one with scarts and im uk
ever since updateing the fw to LNFBE091.ESU.0102.124x and more over to the hacked version of mw9772 version LNFBE091 to enable 3 hours and remove macro
ive noticed in dark scenes theres like a greenish tint effect and motion blurring
i know its not my scarts or sky set up ( i only run through sky and scarts have been tested on there own from sky) and yes sky is configured to rgb and so is the 5005
besides that its fine !
im hopeing one of you guys can hex edit LNFBE091.ESU.0102.124x
so that its possible to to put older verions of fw on my recorder ? as i cant relash fw with anything not even liteons LNFBE091.ESU.0102.124x version
if not ive 2 options wait for a newer fw upgrade and im assumeing here liteon
actually are aware of this fault in there later fw
or return the unit and buy a totaly get a dif unit altogether

any ideas guys ?

[QUOTE=intersys]The edited ENU is can be obtained at http://s19.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2...D2RVCFJVLRR6N7

Thanks intersys!

I applied this fw patch to a US 5005 Nov 04 with fw 091.

I now have 3 hour mode.

But when I try to copy from any dvd player (also with unprotected disc) i get the message "Wrong signal type".
I guess this means MV is still detected?

I was able to do this workaorund:

1) Connect VCR via composite input.
2) Record a second unprotected tape.
3) Put 5005 on pause.
4) Disconnect VCR, connect DVD Player, start DVD.
5) Unpause 5005.

My 5005 recorded any mv protected DVD disc this way.

BUT:
I would really like to edit the 1091 fw with Ultraedit.

However, I do not have the knowledge for Ultraedit.

For instance, I do not even know what is meant with "find 0xEB and add 1"

Could someone please post some simple steps for this Ultraedit editing task?

Recent postings about difficulties with hacked firmware got me wondering.

Once a 5005 is flashed with hacked firmware, is it possible to go back to
the factory rev of the same firmware version? Also, is there any problem
with firmware upgrades on a machine running hacked firmware as its new
"base" version?

For those of you trying to upgrade the firmware and getting a "data disc" or "file" message try this :

Empty the disc tray.
Switching the machine off then on.
Eject the disc tray and put your disc with the file in.
Close the disc tray.

Let me know if you have success, it worked for me.

Revelation, no, is the answer I think, mine is Aug 2004 model and I have twice flashed it first to 091 then hacked 091 and its perfect. Methinks you have a duff machine so get a swap at Argos and try again, its a good recorder, stick with it!

Hello all,

I am new to this and a little bit confused. I would like my recorder to have the capabilities of 3 hour recording with no MV. I live in Michigan and i just purchased my unit from Costco yesterday, with a date of October, 04. I downloaded the latest firmware, and the one that they sent me was
LNFA1091.ESU.0102.184x.rar.

I am a novice when it comes to editing software, so I am quite confused on how to do hack this on my own.

I am hoping that someone could repost the site where I could download the updated firmware that I should use.

Thanks, Ray

Go to page 4 of this thread and look for the post by intersys where he provided a link to the hacked version of LNFA1091.ESU

Hi everybody,

Thanks to all, I could finally patch my LNFB2091.ESU.0102 fw and now I have no mv and LP. I am very happy about that!

However I still have an undiscussed problem (at least I think it is undiscussed) concerning OTR (One Touch Recording) and auto-sleep:

My wish is the following: I want to start recording from the internal tuner using OTR (i.e. 2 hours = 4*30 min) and do my Liteon 5005 go automatically into standby (30 min after the end of the recording) using the auto-sleep function. Unfortunately I cant manage that. At the end of the recording time, the device switches the source to the internal tuner (the channel used for recording) and the auto-sleep function does not work at all. However, when no source is selected (blue Liteon's start screen) my device goes into standby after the auto-sleep delay!

Any comment or hint is welcome.

Thanks to all.

What is the news with the LNFA1000.E20.0102 update?
I know it is a drive firmware update but the question I have is will it interfere with the patched system firmware update I did which was LNFA1091.ESU.0102.
This is the messege on the LiteOn site:
Please note that update system firmware should be done first before you update drive firmware.
This is to prevent some drive update issues.
