Is it somewhere between a "tick" and a "thud/thump"? It sounds like all it's going to do is make a quiet "tick", but then the head "thuds/thumps" to a stop. And with all those vent holes keeping it cool, you hear every little tick. Plus, it's constantly loading and unloading the heads with 2 or three "ticks"/"thumps". You definitely know what this drive is doing at all times, and I like it.

And I thought my Hitachi was loud
It ties my Seagate in seek noise so far. But what's most noticeable is the spindle motor sometimes makes a pretty loud hum to spin the platters up from rest [like the many Seagates I've run across with their signature hum], and other times makes only a slight whir [like my Samsung and old 60 GB PATA Maxtor]. It seems it has a mind of its own about how fast or slow it wants to get those platters to spinning. But, again, it's nice to be able to hear the fact that my drive is working.

Nice drive though, the WD
Indeed.

No ticks/thumps, and no loud hum

Mine just does your "regular" seeking noises...but about 5x louder and 20x as often - as you say, you definitely know what the drive's doing!

Guess what you hear/how loud you hear it could depend on where the drive's sitting - mine's sat next to my monitor on the desktop (plugged into my Dell, which has the better USB throughput)...and maybe 'cos it's out on top I can just hear it more...

Funny you compare it to your Seagate seek-noise-wise. My Seagate's the quietest drive I have, hardly ever hear it. Only my mum's Sammy SpinPoint is quieter

Is the enclosure completely enclosed, or does it have a few vents? The WD enclosure has 3 of its 6 sides serving as some pretty effective cooling vents, so not much of a chance for acoustics to get silenced.

So my drive has character.

My PATA 300 GB Seagate of yore [and my other external HDD--a 250 GB FreeAgent Desk] are quiet while my current 320 GB SATA Seagate is noticeable, but it's been said that Seagate enabled AAM for PATA drives and disabled AAM for SATA drives.

So my drives are loudest to quietest:
  1. WD My Book 750 GB tied with Seagate Barracuda 320 GB 7200.11 SATA
  2. WD GreenPower 500 GB SATA
  3. Seagate FreeAgent Desk 250 GB
  4. WD Scorpio 250 GB tied with Fujitsu MHW2120BH 120 GB [both 2.5" drives, 5400 RPM]
  5. Samsung Spinpoint P-series 200 GB [3.5", 7200 RPM]
My oldest drive is my quietest. Now, I need to try Toshiba and Hitachi.

3 sides are mesh screen. The front folds down when you put a ODD in it for loading a disc so it has plenty of ventilation.

Edit:
It is a (Green SATA [not the color])) WD 1TB if that matters.

Don't say you weren't warned about the Hitachi - you can hear mine over the (loud) CPU fan, and that's saying something ...saying that, mine's only a 250GB drive, they may have grown quieter as sizes increased (one can hope LOL).

But I bet you never run across buffer underruns just because files are fragmented if a drive has such loud seeking [assuming that the speed of the seek causes the noise].

They happen when you have a Samsung SpinPoint P-series that's not been defragmented in a month and you're trying to back up 30 GB of files.

There's some truth to that. My Samsung is worst in real-world seek times, and its smallish 8 MB buffer doesn't help that out too much. But it works and it's reliable, so...

LOL

I can't wait to get my paws on my mum's Sammy SpinPoint P-series to give it a bit of a workout (I'll get it *when* we eventually swap PC's). I'll get it good and fragmented before I make any backups

Today must be the happiest day of my life as a CDFreak. I was supposed to (just) buy a few Verbatim Pastel Extra Protection discs (I thought 800 was a good number! ) when I chanced upon a newly-opened PC parts shop. Long story short, my hunt for Pastels ended with a lot less pastels but more goodies, which, specifically, are:
  • 2x BenQ DW1640 (Black and Beige) [MIC]
  • 1x 100pk Sigma (Melody) Blue 1-48x CD-R (MCC AZO) [MIT]
  • 2x 50pk Verbatim Pastel 52x CD-R (TY)
  • 4x 50pk Verbatim Pastel Extra Protection 52x CD-R (TY)
  • 1x 100pk Verbatim 8x DVD-R White Inkjet Hub Printable (MCC 02RG20) [MIT-Prodisc]

...so now I'm ~$130 poorer, but a much happier CDFreak I must say. That shop must've had 20 DW1640 drives, my next "target" is the Made in Malaysia unit. Oh happy day! I wish I could buy the whole lot but I'm holding back... is there such a thing as having too many drives?!

Nope - the proper amount of drives is only limited by available time, space and money.
