| Re: Quest for the Longest Thread On CD Freaks! Hmm.. Thinking of building a computer (never really built one before).. But I'm confused in the motherboard department. I don't really know what is a good one and a bad one...... I would like dual-processing.. But I don't know what RAID is and all the other crap .. Anybody care to inform me? |

@theone1_, why would you wanna have dual procs?? RAID is for harddrives. Do you want speed or redundancy?

1) back-up: the data that you write on one HD is automatically copied to the second. So the HD are exact copies of eachother. This is to be used as a safety procedure, if one HD fails, you still have the second one and no data is lost. 2) half/half: If you save some data it is split in two, one half will be saved on the first HD, the other half on the second. This increases the speed of which you can acces data, since it will simultaneous read the data from the first and second HD. Ofcourse in case of HD failure, you lose all data. One is called RAID 0 and the other RAID 1, can't remember which is which. You also have RAID-5 but that is more for servers and most used with more then 2 HD. Well that's all I can remember, not sure that everything is 100% correct, it should be close though.

| Re: Quest for the Longest Thread On CD Freaks! Alright, guys (and girls), I need your help! I've made a list of the things that are appealing to me (and my budget ). I need somone to tell me what motherboard is good for the stuff I want, and possibly tell me some better options to the ones I have.I decided against a dual-processor - the price of the motherboards is a bit too much ![]() Any tips too would be helpful ![]() (Inside the ZIP file is a HTM file.. I'm too lazy to upload to my server) |

![]() for the HD i'd shell out the extra 2$ for 8mb cache, it helps the speed anyways: if you want a cost effective motherboard that suits your processor, take a look at asrock, preferably the k7s8xe (or e+) it's not the best one available, but it runs like a dream here, and it's cheap to boot. also, generic ram could work, but it's better to stick to a brand like kingston, kingston valueram is very good. Also, i would certainly get at least the radeon 9550, not the 9250 if you like to play any games, the 9200 series suck badly. Personally i would go for a 9600, because it is a newer generation card.

| Re: Quest for the Longest Thread On CD Freaks! I would go for a AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (costs €200 overhere) although it needs a more expensive motherboard it's faster than the Barton you picked. Take the 8Mb harddrive, yep. And I also would say (just like mace1337), take brand memory.

| Re: Quest for the Longest Thread On CD Freaks! Well his first choice the Barton costs $221, the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ costs €200, I don't know the €/$ ratio, but it couldn't differ that much right? If you're going for an AMD proc, don't mind about the DDR/DDR2 question, AMD works with DDR.

| Re: Quest for the Longest Thread On CD Freaks! ddr2 is newer and can reach higher speeds, but it also has higher latencies. ddr has lower speeds but lower latencies. as of right now, ddr2 has absolutely no benefits over normal ddr, maybe in the future it will when it'll reach higher speeds. But right now ddr is the better choiche
