In the past couple of days there has been a virus roaming the internet, causing a lot of victims. Some people do not even realise they are infected and infect others.

On my personal e-mail account I have not received one virus mail so far (knock on wood), but somehow I receive a lot of virus mails on my CD Freaks account, including the Helpdesk@cdfreaks.com account. The strange part is that I receive emails from people whom I never mailed before, at least to my knowledge.

Of course I don't have to tell you this does not please me very much. Although I do have a good antivirus program running because of these virusses, I don't like it when it pops up and notifies me of yet another virus that has been sent to me through mail.

Every mail has a different subject and is between 120 KB and 180KB in size, thus causing quite some data traffic too. This isn't so much of a problem to me since I am on cable, but how about those poor victims who are on modem and have to pay for every minute it takes to download these messages...

I beg of you all, please scan your computer for virusses and prevent others from getting infected.

For all of you out there I have collected various links to interesting sites. First list of virus removal tools and trial antivirus software, then a few links where various programs are discussed and you can make up your mind on what would be the best program for your situation. Furthermore I have included a list of a few recent virusses that are currently causing the most damage as well as a few links where sort of a virus database can be found. Finally I have included a small text especially for Microsoft Outlook users. I hope you find this information useful and will bookmark at least some of the links.

You can get all kinds of removal tools from the larger anti virus companies. Below I have listed a few places where you can get free removal tools (or trial versions of antivirus software) for the latest virusses out there (or trial versions of Antivirus software).
(alphabetical order by company name)
Interesting links and forum threads on what is the best antivirus program can be found here:
More info on the latest virusses out there can be found here:
General lists of latest virusses found:
For Microsoft Outlook users this is a must read:
Quote:
The worm exploits a vulnerability in Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express in an attempt to execute itself when you open or even preview the message in which it is contained. Information and a patch for the vulnerability are available at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec...n/MS01-020.asp
This thread has costed me quite some time to compile. Most information listed was found by using the search of this forum, suplemented with common sense. I hope you will find this thread useful and will put my efforts to good use and protect yourself against the dangers of virusses.

Again, please make your and my life easier and be sure you are well protected against virusses. If you have any suggestions or additions, please post below so we can all benefit.

Thanks in advance!

Lol!

Good advice! I totally agree, since internet came into our lives you really need to have an up-to-date virusscanner! I personally prefer McAfee, with its auto-update feature which gets the latest virus-defenitions-file once a week.

Totally agree. I prefer F-Secure. Very good scanner, daily updated.
I also think it would be better if the admins make this thread sticky. It's very useful, for al cd freaks visitors.

only a few months back i reviced a virus in my personal email acount who fucked up my pc even with avp running(configurated it wrong had it on automatic cleaning instead of blocking wich is on now).

Any way also i have recied a lot of emails to my hotmail acount from people i never mailed with but thats the nature of some virusses who look in to the html for email adresses to send there selfs to with major virus outbreaks i have my hotmail acount packing up with it..

Any anti virus programs are nessecery these days.
The Cleaner is a good program made for finding and removing trojans and worms only somtimes avp dont see`s anything The Cleaner saved me already a couple of times.

I made the thread sticky. This will indeed be useful for all CD Freaks visitors. People have tried to infect me with the Klez worm 4 times today (Which is additionally annoying, since I run Linux, so it wouldn't affect me anyway).

May I point out this particular newspoting to you then:
Quote:
Source: CD Freaks mainpage
A bug in the code of WinAmp 2.79 allows a specially formed data tag in an MP3 file to cause a buffer overrun in the application, which could be exploited to run any piece of code the attacker wishes. The glitch was posted to the BugTraq security mailing list on Friday by Andreas Sandblad, a Swedish engineering student.
It is something to consider...

@Upp3rd0G:
Had to live up to my reputation, didn't I

I'm using WinAmp 2.78c

But all versions before 2.80 Have that problem.

This "virus" only works when you have the mini browser enabled

Who is using that mini browser anyway?

Yes they can...
Not peripherials, but there are virusses that can damage your BIOS in a way that the BIOS has to be replaced. One of the virusses I can remember doing this was CIH.

Quote:
On, Wednesday, April 26, 2000 the CIH virus "Chernobyl" destroyed the contents of the hard disk and the writable BIOS (Flash BIOS) in a great number of computers in South Korea, so that the computer was rendered even unable to be turned on in.
Another search turned up the Kriz virus. Read more on that here:
Viruslist

A Kriz look-a-like virus was the "Magistr". Read more here: The Register or Viruslist

Not something to ignore, they are a real threat.

AVG is THE BEST FREEWARE virusscanner...

Hi,

I am using the minibrowser with internet connection enabled so that the liquid audio (lqt or aac) un-official plugin works and shows lyrics and album cover art for such files when the title bar is clicked on - the internet connection is used in 'local' mode but is needed to be enabled for the lqqt browser to work.

I have now gone to 2.80

One day MS will support virus's in plain text files triggered by viewing!!

I had Norton AV 2001 and upgraded my comp to XP. Now 2001 doesn't work and untill I get my but moving to buy a new version I have no anti-virus running. I go an e-mail to my OUTLOOK EXPRESS account and have no clue how they got the address. But the e-mail contains an .exe file, a jpg file and a ATT00001.txt (or simalar) file. I'm pretty sure this is a virus because I don't know the person and two different people with names like "The_Football_Man" sent it to me.

My question is, how can I find out if this is a virus (~70% sure it is) and what one it is? I'm avioding trial software and the such because I don't like installing things that I will remove later (orphan files). Maybe there is a search engine I can type the file names in or something?

Anyways, I better get that NAV 2002 quick.

Thanks.

You can save the files to your harddisk.
You can then use an online scanner tool.
I believe one of my previously mentioned links contains one...

I figured out what I had. It was the KLEZ.H worm. Used some on-line tool wich took forever but at least now I know. That worm is, while not very damaging, spreads like fire. It stops all Anti-virus programs from functioning which makes you vulnerable to other viruses.

I remember a virus back in my Commodore 64 days that would make the 1541 drive (5.25" floppy) emit buzzing noises in the pattern of a song. This sounds innocent except that the drive was severely damaged in doing this.

I was recently infected by some virus without me knowing it... I have since then formatted my computer and I think I'm now virus free again. I never thought I would be infected cause I always delete e-mails from people I don't know, especially the ones with attachments. Therefore I never used any AntiVirus software and I still don't intend to. I was infected because I let my kid bother on my computer and he was using a floppy with a virus. I asked him what he did to my computer and he said that because the floppy didn't work at his friends house because it had a virus, he though he would use my computer instead Oh well thanks for the tips Da_Taxman. Just visited http://housecall.antivirus.com to check my back-up disc I created before formatting. It was virus free

W32/Onamu@MM was on the computer next to me at this "cyber cafe" I even saw some idiot downloading some stuff in his mail and he said "How do I open this? What is a .XXX (whatever misc. characters, etc.) file." I said "It looks like a virus to me." And he swore it couldn't be because it got emailed from a friend. I had to tell him that's exactly how they get spread...He still clicked on it like it had some porn of the hot chick next door hiding inside. What a jerk. It goes to show you, even if you trust YOURSELF you can't trust ANYONE else on your computer.
