know of anyone busted for copying discs

I read the FBI warning every time I play a movie I copied. My wife is worried about ever being caught. Does anyone know of someone arrested for copyright infringement? If so what was the consequences?

I this day and age, I'd be more worried about the MPAA/RIAA than the FBI.

As long as you aren't reselling or burning and returning no one would probably ever know...except for those downloads of DVDD, AnyDVD, DVDFab and the list goes on. We all know what those programs are for.

The more you brag, the more they find out.

The penalties are harsh. Did you actually read the FBI texts?

It's hard to prove you were breaking copyright infringment, you have a legal right to back up your own media.

For all they know, you burned one of your own movies, and unfortunetely the real copy broke because of your 3 year old.

-wink-

Try telling that to a judge when you get busted! And he will tell you he has a legal right to give you a heavy fine $$$$ or even but you behind bars !

A lot of people are busted because they are reported by some they know, a friend, some one they know from work or former friend that has it in for them, there is also a reward $$$ for them. You never know when the FBI comes knocking at your front door.

Re: know of anyone busted for copying discs

Don't just think that one country lets you back up your DVD collection that it's like that everywhere, thats far from the truth.
If you were found with a copy of a film and you did not have the origional then unless you had broke it that day (and still have the bits to prove it) they would ask why you could not have bought a replacement (and in court probabaly shown that there were a whole bunch of places you could have bought one by were you live, on the way to work or within walking distance from work).

coathi is right, you are more likley be reported by someone you know, so as long as you don't advertise the fact that you do DVD backups then you will probabaly be OK.

Whether you are allowed to make a backup copy for personal use depends on the laws in your country. Many countries allow a backup for personal use, but don't allow for the copy protection to be circumvented.

WOn't work, unless you can show the broken original... And even then, my comment above applies.

Re: know of anyone busted for copying discs

There are people getting busted for anything. It's a risk you take. But if you just back up just DVDs for archive and never lend it to anyone or tell anyone that you did it, I doubt you'll ever get caught. If that FBI warning bothers you, you can ra-author the DVD and remove it.
