Re: Formula 1 & Motorsport Chat

Well that was a very dull race (remember the first lap of last year's race). But that was often the case before refuelling was reintroduced in 1994. The classic 1978 South African GP the BBC showed a few days ago was a good example. I hate to think how dull Valencia will be this year.

Sauber's performance was very poor, even in the race. They must have been running a car with no fuel and no ballast in testing, presumably hoping to get the attention of a sponsor. Renault on the other hand seemed more competitive than expected.

Lotus had very good race pace. Kovalainen was lapping in the 2:02s towards the end when the leaders were doing 2:00s.

Vettel's problem was apparantly a spark plug failure, not the exhaust.

What did you think of the track extension? I thought it was awful. It's removed the most interesting part of a very dull circuit, and the bumps were inexcusable.

A dull race. F1 makes many changes each year yet still no passing! Just get rid of the wings.

I will disagree on that, first we saw that its extremely hard to overtake with extra 160 kilos of fuels, second no one wanted to push because of the tires degradation and last no driver wanted to punish the engine (8 engines for 19 races), so for me it was a dull race and most of them will be like that.

Dont forget that some teams were 8 seconds behind the leaders in the second or third lap.

Before the cars had downforce it was mostly about straight line speed, braking with crappy brakes & reliability. In a good car downforce rewards the braver driver, more speed=more grip (especially in the 'ground effect' era). The problem these days is that the teams have just got too good at just about everything - producing downforce, reliability, stratergy, making the tyres last etc.

After the race Jenson Button said that he had been too cautious looking after his tyres in the first stint and he could have gone much further on them, but the team wanted to bring him in anyway because there was a clear gap in the traffic for him to drop into. Things will hopefully get better by mid-season once the teams learn more about how the races will develop. Back in 1994 it took a long time for most teams to realise the possibilities of fuel stratergies and altering their pre-race plans to take advantage of the way the race developed.

Another factor this year is that the current tyre rules are too restrictive - the top 10 drivers must start on their qualifying tyres, only 2 types are brought to each race and both sets must be used in the race. It didn't matter as much with refueling, but now it virtually guarantees that everyone will have the same stratergy The top 10 cars will all start on the softer tyre and change to the harder at 25-35% into the race and the other cars will all do the exact opposite (hard then soft). In the old days there was a choice of 3 race tyres so there was the option of running the whole race on one hard tyres or gambling on using 2-3 sets of medium or soft tyres. And if a car had to make an unscheduled stop later in the race they could put on a set of soft tyres and drive flat out trying to make up for lost time (Mansell vs Senna at Monaco in 1992 for example). I don't think that the proposal to make everyone do two (or more) stops will help at all.

The 'double deck' diffusers certainly aren't helping overtaking and some teams (Ferrari, Mercedes) have taken the concept even further this year. For example, some teams have exploited the regulation which allows a hole for the starter motor. Fortunately they should be banned from 2011. But all that money spent developing tall narrow gearboxes for 2009/10 will be wasted and they will have to spend as much again developing low grarboxes again. But that's Formula 1.

Re: Formula 1 & Motorsport Chat

McLaren, Mercedes & at least 2 other teams (thought to be Force India & Renault) have had to modify their diffusers. The FIA decided that their 'starter motor' holes were too large. The FIA has now decided on a maximum diameter, although the exisiting regulations did not specify any dimensions. After Bahrain McLaren said that their hole was smaller than Brawn's was for the whole of last year.

Sauber are the first team to copy McLaren's 'F-duct'. To get around the chassis homologation regulations they have mounted the intake on the left sidepod. It is not known how the driver controls the system. They haven't been been able to test in a wind tunnel because the maximum wind tunnel speed the teams are now limited to is too low.

Qualifying in Australia revealed that starting order:

1. S.Vettel
2. M.Webber
3. F.Alonso
4. J.Button
5. F.Massa

Hamilton didnt made it into the final Q. He will start from #11, but this race will be long and difficult. Almost anything can happen.

IMO what made it a good race wasn't actually the rain, but not having to run both types of slick tyres. It was a classic example of having to weigh up the advantage of fresh tyres vs the time taken to make the pit stop. All they have to do to get more races like that is revoke the rules requiring everyone to use both types of slick tyres during the race and the top-10 to start on their qualifying tyres.

Any thoughts?

Re: Formula 1 & Motorsport Chat

I enjoyed the race yesterday as well, in stark contrast to the first race which IMO, was very boring.
@Ibex
IMO, some of the rules regarding F1 are just plain stupid, one of these is the requirement to run two different tyre's, the other is no fuel stops.
Choice of tyre and fuel strategy made things interesting.

It now seems they have to run a race with one hand tied behind their back, in what is supposed to be the premium race event, with the worlds premium cars and drivers.
To much silliness with the rules, IMO.

The race was fine, but the fact the you can have a race with one or even zero pit stops is hilarious and in some other tracks i believe that it will be very boring.

True, true.

I enjoyed watching the onboard camera (channel). Still my favour when its racing time.

Also boring that the F1 is still in SD and not HD.

Re: Formula 1 & Motorsport Chat

The FIA are under pressure to issue a clarification of the rules regarding suspension.

In qualifying you could hear the Red Bull cars scraping the ground, but they had no problems with 'plank' wear the race. So they appear to have a system to adjust or control the ride height to compensate (which would explain their stunning qualifying pace).

But (according to Ross Brawn) the current Parc Fermé rules don't permit any changes to the suspension between qualifying and the race, and in-car suspension adjustment has been banned since 1994. It is suspected that they may have a system to pressurise the dampers to lower the car before qualifying. After qualifying the pressure would be released to raise the ride height for the race. Surely thay haven't managed to design an entirely passive system to compensate for a 200Kg+ increase in fuel load?

Those ridiculous sidepod mirrors are finally going to be banned from the Chinese GP (here).

Massa says he has no problems with visibility using them, but Coulthard and a few other drivers he's hit over the years might disagree.

Re: Formula 1 & Motorsport Chat

Webber on pole by over 1.3 seconds.

Both Ferraris & Hamilton out in Q1 after. Button 17th but goes off at the end of Q1 so out of Q2.

FOTA are meeting this weekend to discuss KERS and tyres. Renault & Ferrari are very keen to start using KERS again (nooo ) and raising the amount of energy they are permitted to store to 800KJ. But other teams are opposed to the idea, partly because their systems may not be capable of storing 800KJ. KERS has not been banned, but the FOTA teams agreed last year that none of them would use it for 2010.

They are also going to discuss a proposal that the maximum wheel diameter should be increased from 13" to 18" for next year. This would allow lower profile tyres to be used which may give more mechanical grip and, with the FIA expected to ban tyre warmers, should warm up quicker. But some are against the idea as it would require a complete redesign of the cars suspension, brakes & aerodynamics. Also lower profile tyres would have very different handling characteristics and would probably lose grip more suddenly.

With Bridgestone pulling out at the end of the season there will be be completely new tyres for 2011 anyway and it is likely that there will no longer be a single tyre supplier. Dunlop and another major tyre company (Pirelli ???) have stated that they are not interested in returning to F1 and Michelin (the only other company with the capacity to supply the whole grid) have said that they are only interested if there is competition with other tyre suppliers. Korean tyre manufacturers Hankook & Kumho are reported to be interested in entering F1, but neither are thought to be capable of supplying the whole grid. Bridgestone have dismissed the suggestion that they are reconsidering their decision to withdraw, but have said that they would "examine the tender process when it is opened, just in case there was anything on offer that may be attractive for the Japanese company".

The ban on sidepod mounted mirrors has been postponed until Barcelona.

Re: Formula 1 & Motorsport Chat

MW is on the inter, so if the weather is ok he might have a chance, but if we have a heavy rain then he wont be number one for a long time.

Ferrari is always willing to win and i dont think that renault has the the money to keep developing the car, plus what about the other team that didnt have kers? Also how much this will ad to the budget of other teams?
Finally if we put kers we will have again zero overtaking, as we saw the last year.

Payback for michellen, after what the FIA (a.k.a ferrari international assistance) did in the USA GP back in 2005 now if they cant find another supplier that can produce that much tires (13 teams in 2011?) they will have to beg michellen.

18" rims are one step, the next step should be 50-70% less aerodynamics and 4 cylinder 1.5 liter turbo engines.

Malaysian Grand Prix Results:

1. S.Vettel
2. M.Webber
3. N.Rosberg
4. R.Kubica
5. A.Sutil
6. L.Hamilton
7. F.Massa

Finally RedBullRacing showed their superior pace along with their reliability which was in big question over the last weeks because of the bad race results compared to the nearly unbeatable Qualifying results.

Kinda interesting overall that it was dry all over the race, absolute contra to the Qualifying...

Yes but since we didn't have the rain we expected more from the other three drivers (JB/FA/FM) but only LH did all the dirt work, so my respect goes to him.
Also the suicide move from Alonso was very good but extremely stupid.
